The Redmi needs no introduction. It is the cheapest Android made by reputed China Android manufacturer, Xiaomi. The Redmi also made the buzz as the first phone to be sold in 6 minutes from launch on its official Singapore online store. The second release was also the same. I managed to score one on its third release which ended in 12 minutes. At this price for that specifications, there is no need to think, just click and buy! The rave also brought about an in flux of China domestic market version of Redmi called Hongmi (红米). However, the Hongmi does not come with local warranty and does not come Google services installed. Hence, users will have to installed Google Play, Gmail, Maps etc separately.

The Redmi runs a 1.5GHz quad-core processor with 1GB RAM, which is a decent Android phone for most people and at a ridiculously affordable price. This is actually not surprising since the device runs on the budget MediaTek processor which can also be found in budget devices from big players such as Sony and Samsung. Since Redmi does not support 4G/LTE, it could be another reason for its affordable price tag.

Nevertheless, the Redmi is a phone I would recommend to anyone who wants to jump on the smartphone bandwagon.

Getting Started

The Redmi takes a while to first boot into MIUI V5 over Android 4.2 Jellybean.

In Stunning Display

The Redmi utilizes a 4.7-inch 1280x720 resolution IPS display which is simply stunning compared to similar priced China-made phones.

Redmi comes with microSD card support up to 32GB and 2 SIM card slots for GSM and WCDMA.

Once again, note that Redmi supports up to 3G only and does not support 4G/LTE.

Here are samples coming directly from the Redmi 8MP rear camera. By default, the Redmi is set to Basic mode which defaults resolution at 6MP. Setting the camera to Advanced mode, allows selection of 8MP and a wide array of adjustments. The Redmi has an impressive camera that rivals my Note II. Interestingly, the Redmi is very good for Macro shots, putting most smartphone cameras to shame.
