EATZ: Sungei Road Laksa

As recommended by many reviews and friends, I decided to pay Kelantan Lane a visit, to try out the famous "Sungei Road Laksa". It was my first time there, though every now and then, I would visit the "Thieves' Market" at Kelantan Lane/Sungei Road. The stall is located in "Seng Chuan Eating House", a coffeeshop along Kelantan Lane. Kelantan Lane can be accessed from the "Thieves Market" or from Jalan Besar. Bikers would know that it is where the famous bike servicing shop, "Lim Ah Boy" is located.
Laksa has already become a local delight and iconic food of Singapore. Laksa is actually a food of Peranakan culture, where the taste of Malay and Chinese merged to create this greating tasting spicy noodle dish. The local laksa dish has been made famous by the stalls along East Coast Road, peddling a mean tasting bowl of "Katong Laksa".

Laksa
S$2/3
Served with only a spoon, the "Sungei Road Laksa" is supposed to be consumed like the popular "Katong Laksa". I was expecting the laksa to be served in a claypot as according to reviews, but it was served in ceramic bowl instead. Additional chilli is available upon request and served on the spoon. The S$3 version came with so much cockles that I was sold before I even tasted it. The thick rice vermicelli (beehoon) is cut into short strands so that it can be taken with a spoonful of the tasty laksa soup. I found something amiss about the soup. Though the soup being tasty, spicy and 'sweet', it lacks the richness and 'body'. I suspect they could have used powdered coconut cream instead of the grated coconut cream. There is also no tau pok. Nevertheless, it tasted good. I also added an "otah" (spicy fish cake) for a buck. The otah is very tasty, though not too spicy for my taste.

Verdict
The laksa is definitely worth the price and very tasty. The strong coconut flavour in the soup makes gave this Sungei Road Laksa, the winning bid, but still not quite a winner. It would definitely score full marks if the soup is thick, richer and more full-bodied. There is word that the "Sungei Road Laksa" is not the 'real' "Sungei Road Laksa", and the real one is at Blk 27 Jalan Berseh #01-100 Jin Shui Kopitiam. I vow to visit them someday to get a taste of Singapore's Best Laksa!
