EATZ: Satay Beehoon & Cuttlefish Kangkong

The Ang Mo Kio Central Food Centre & Wet Market has finally opened after a major renovation. The stalls now operate on a self-service. In the past, all stalls a lined on two sides, back to back. Now the stalls are lined in a diagonal orientation with 4 or 5 isles. Though the overall appearance is much brighter and cleaner, I do not really like orientation as it makes ordering from different stalls difficult, having to run between isles.

Nevertheless, I am rather glad that the earlier tenants are back in full force! The famous "curry yong tau foo" is here and even the two "satay beehoon" stalls, except that they are now separated in different isles. I decide that I shall have "satay beehoon" and "cuttlefish kangkong".

Centre Satay Bee Hoon
#01-12
Apart from the various reviews and culinary award, the billboard also showed a picture of the chef and Minister Khaw Boon Wan. I guess that suggests "Health Endorsed!?"
Satay Beehoon
S$3
Thick and heavy peanut satay gravy drowns the beehoon and any ingredients. There are cuttlefish, shrimps, tau pok (dried beancurd) and kangkong.

Cuttlefish Kangkong
S$3.00
If you like the kangkong (water morning glory leaves, 空心菜) and cuttlefish in the satay beehoon, how about an overdose with the cuttlefish kangkong dish. More kangkong, more cuttlefish, generous serving of jelly fish strips, crushed peanuts, sesame seeds and ar-char (pickled cucumber), soaked in a sweet sauce the one used in chee cheong fun) and sesame oil cocktail.

Verdict

"Shiok!" is what I use to describe the satay beehoon and cuttlefish kangkong. The satay sauce is very dense, tasty and nutty. Just can't get enough out of a S$3 portion, though it is sufficient for one person. The cuttlefish are crunchy, not too chewy and not too tough. The different ingredients adds a magical twist of texture and taste to this dish. I was slurping down the kangkong with the thick and oily sweet sauce. It is really good stuff! No wonder passer-bys could not help but check out my greedy look filled with enjoyment. Sinful? No! They are endorsed by our Health Minister!
