EATZ: Nasi Briyani, Ah Mei Cafe

From "kaya toast" (egg & coconut jam toast) to fragrant traditional "kopi" (coffee with milk) or "teh-c" (black tea with evaporated milk), "Ah Mei Kaya Toast Cafe" serves all the traditional beverages and snacks. "Ah Mei Kaya Toast Cafe" is a chain of coffee joints that is up against the other players such as "Ya Kun Kaya Toast". In order to be popular, they must be different. Hence, "Ah Mei Kaya Toast Cafe" decided to serve Indian food as well, and that is what made them popular, "roti prata" (indian pancake) and "nasi briyani" (briyani rice with either chicken, mutton or fish). The outlet at Ang Mo Kio Hub seems to be crowded most of the time. Most of the time, people visit the outlet for their "roti prata" and "nasi briyani", so are they any good or they are just banking on the 'follow-the-crowd' principle? I find it out for you.

Nasi Briyani with Chicken

S$4.50
Densely orangy and yellowish fragrant briyani, half drowned in a light curry gravy, topped with a huge slab of fried chicken drumstick (alternatively, there is curry chicken as well) and ar-char.

Nasi Briyani with Mutton
S$5
Same fragrant and tasty-looking rice with a huge slab of mutton on a large bone with ar-char. I realised that I am missing on the pappads, or probably they do not include pappads.

Verdict
It sure is more than just 'follow-the-crowd' principle! Having had many Nasi Briyani and the best being "Allauddin's" and portion-wise being "Sri-Kamala", I thought a "Ah Mei Kaya Toast Cafe" would not stand a chance against the Indian food hawkers, but I was so darn wrong! The briyani rice is fragrant, very tasty and not clumpy. I saw that the rice came pre-cooked in huge clear bags, hence there must be some chef somewhere! Singaporeans love spicy chilli in anything, but the light curry gravy is actually meanly spicy! You should really be careful not to choke on it! Underneath the crispy chicken skin is tender and juicy white meat. So succulent was the drumstick that I had to savour it with my hands. I did not try any of the mutton as there was not much meat among the huge bone. Nevertheless, Arthur was pleased. Portion-wise is decent, I was still able to go for another snack. The price is alwso very reasonable.
Overall, double thumbs up and "not to be missed"!
