Sony Ericsson K770i

It is not the time of year yet, but I am already joining the queue. I really detest queueing up at the never-ending beeline at the telcos. It seems like everyone is holding more than one mobile line and phone. There is never one day when the telcos are not busy. But I was there earlier before my time for an equipment upgrade and mobile contract extension. My two year contract with MobileOne will be due in May 2008. If I am holding a MobileOne line, so what was I doing at the Singtel!?
I have an expired SingNet ADSL broadband account (under Singtel), but I was not there to extent my SingNet contract, since I am waiting for any possible Christmas subscription/ recontract offers. I am actually holding a Classic account under the CIS (Corporate Individual Scheme), which I have let my mum use. The contract for that line is long up, but I was hesitant to recontract. Until I was given the latest promotional leaflet.
The front page of the promotional leaflet shows Sony Ericsson K770i selling at a promotional price of S$68 (with any basic plan sign-up). This phone originally retails at S$268. On their website, it states that full-time students can score this phone for only S$28 only! What a ploy to get the students into the groove of owning new mobiles instead of inheriting their folks or elder sibling's two year old mobile. I am supposed to be entitled to a free Sony Ericsson Bluetooth headset (HBH-DS200) worth S$128. But since I am a CIS account holder, I am told that I am not entitled to it. I would rather choose to retain my CIS account that saves me S$312, than give it up for something that I would never need/use.
The SE K770i comes in 3 colours to choose from: Sandy Beige, Ultra Violet, Truffle Brown. With the metallic chassis of the phone, the finish of the Sandy Beige looks more like silver, while the truffle brown looks almost like very dark bronze. There was only Sandy Beige and Truffle Brown available. I would prefer any of these two colours than the 'ghey' violet. I chose Truffle Brown because when the keypad and other LED lights up, they gives the phone a cool contrast making the blue lights look brighter, kinda like "KITT" from "Knight Rider". This phone supports 3G function which my MobileOne SIM is not, hence I won't be able to use the 3G functions until I change my SIM.
Ever since I defected from Nokia after much disappointments, I decided to join the Sony Ericsson bandwagon with K750i. I have decided to stay with Sony Ericsson until something else impresses me.

The Sony Ericsson K770i, unlike its cousins and ancestor K750i, comes in a compact simple-looking cuboid paper box with a clear window showing off the mobile phone. The box is sealed by a tamper-proof security label. Though sealed with the label, the content has obviously been
tempered' by Singtel, from seeing the Singtel advertisement boot-up screen and screensaver. Luckily, these settings can be changed.

So why have I chosen this phone?
  1. It is sleek!
At just 14.5mm thickness, it slips into the pocket easily without the bulge. The sliding camera lens cover, is flushed with the main body, making it a smooth surface to handle. The rounded and curved edges just adds sleekness to it.

  2. The 3.2 megapixel Cybershot™ AF camera.
Once pampered k750i's 2 megapixel Cybershot™ Auto Focus (AF) camera, I only hunger for more megapixel which are useful when my 4-megapixel Canon IXUS 40 is flat on cell. The Cybershot™ series of Sony Ericsson phones have dramatically improved in terms of functions, especially with the "PhotoFix". "PhotoFix" performs a similar function to "Shadows & Highlights" in "Adobe Photoshop", whereby the algorithms of the phone automatically calculates and brings out the details in the shadows while keeping the highlights in control. A very good function that gives the Cybershot™ phones and edge over other makes. Another feature is the photo light located at the top corner, flushed with the body. I prefer the photo light over the xenon flash, as flash tends to kill the macro shots. Photo light also serves as a torchlight in most situations, like my K750i. Finally, this camera allows user to choose metering mode between center-weighted and matrix/evaluative. (about time we get more selective on exposure control)!

  3. Wide buttons and joypad, all flushed!
Though this phone is very much similar, in terms of specifications, to its cousin SE K810i. The appearance are poles apart. The wide buttons are almost flushed with the sleek body. The replacement of joystick (like my K750i) with a joypad is a wise move, after many complains of a failing joystick (though mine still works good). Like the keypad, the joypad is also almost flushed with the body.
A few more details of SE K770i.

The 2nd camera lens located near the earpiece, for 3G functions such as video calls. A small lever beside the power button, pops the rear chassis open.

With the rear chassis out, reveals the naked camera lens, speaker, SIM slot and M2 slot. I was still thinking that they have not bundled with a memory card for this promotion, but the 256MB M2 card is already pre-installed in the memory card compartment.

Let there be light!
With a slide of the camera cover, the camera jumps to life even in the darkest ambient conditions.

The keypads and joypad are illuminated with a brilliant blue glow. Like a wand casting 'illumina', the photo light illuminates the environment and subject evenly.

Look at how the keypad changes colour from blue to white light,

when the phone goes from camera mode to phone mode.

The Sony Ericsson K770i is definitely the right replacement for my trusted SE K750i, which has served me well. At S$68, this is definitely the best mobile phone deal that I have ever scored. This promotion is on for a week only and ends on 14th of December 2007, only available at Singtel.

So how does K770i fair/fall short against the slightly more powerful K810i?
