Look what I have had! 客家算盘子

We all know and have had "Yong Tau Foo" as part of our daily lunch option, but did you know that "Yong Tau Foo" is a dish from the 客家 (Hakka, a Chinese dialect group) cuisine. Other popular Hakka dishes include stewed pork with preserved vegetables and Thunder Tea (lei cha). Of course not to forget the 算盘子 (literally translated to Abacus beads). What seemed like a simple dish is actually not easy to make and requires time to prepare. So why not sample these authentic delights from the hawker stalls?

Abacus beads shaped like red blood cells made from tapioca flour blended with mashed yam tossed with fragrant minced pork, black fungus, shredded beancurd, shredded mushrooms, dried shrimps, garlic, fried shallots and spring onions. It is like a bowl of goodies all mixed in. The abacus beads comes with a bowl of clear soya bean broth which is also the soup base for the Hakka Yong Tau Foo.





Verdict
For S$3, you get a decent bowl of authentic 算盘子 with generous serving of ingredients. You can actually taste and savour the texture of the minced yam, which many others fail to produce. Though the portion is small, it works for me, since I treat this only as a snack! Must try!
