Dining Korean @ JANCHIJIB

"Tasty & Sincere", this is the slogan at "JANCHIJIB". We had always wanted to visit Janchijib since sometime back, but never really set our mind to try. There are many Korean restaurants in the Tanjong Pagar precinct, since that region is known to be popular among the local Korean community. Since the exposure to the Korean culture over the recent years, Korean tourists are more welcomed as our attractions started to add Korean language on top of the existing Japanese. More and more Koreans whom are not familiar with English, are picking it up and many migrating to other countries. I personally know a few Koreans who were in Singapore. They have introduced me to the 'sparkling' Korean culture, though I was not a fanatic over the Korean drama series, like my folks. Most importantly, the phenomenal drama "Daejunggeum", opened the doors to knowing more of Korean food culture. Apart from those served at the food courts, which are not at all authentic, I always loved Korean food! During my trip to Cambodia, the Korean landlord whipped an authentic home-cooked Korean meal for us.

The friendly manager/boss welcomed us to browse their menu and introduced a couple of popular dishes with his strong Korean accent. Our minds were pretty much set to try out Janchijib's, since the other Korean restaurants are more pricey. As usual of any Korean restaurant, a complimentary bottle of home-brewed chilled roasted barley tea is served immediately, instead of iced water. We decided to go for the main stream Korean dishes. We had the Dolsot-Bibimbap, Kimchi Jjigae and Ddeokbokki. After ordering, five plates of kimchi appetizers were served instantly. If you are still thinking that kimchi is 'A' dish, you are wrong! In the Korean cuisine, there are many types of kimchi.

Ban-Chan
I cannot put a name to every type of Ban-chan served, since I am not an expert in Korean food culture. Nevertheless, I shall briefly describe them. The first is definitely the common cabbage kimchi with the mild spice and sour taste. Next is a tofu (beancurd) kimchi preserved in a similar way as the cabbage kimchi. Next, I believe is Kongnamul or big bean sprouts kimchi, which is my favourite. Then the long bean is rather similar to a Chinese style dish. Last is the fishcake kimchi.

Dolsot-Bibimbap
Dolsot Bibimbap is a dish of steamed rice served with shredded vegetables (carrots, cucumber, radish and bean sprouts), beef and raw egg, in a hot-stone bowl. A special sauce is given to be poured over the ingredients, followed by 'blending' all the ingredients together with the rice until a uniform mixture. The hot-stone bowl will then brief cook the egg and the mixed rice. The special sauce gives the bibimbap its unique taste. The bibimbap comes with a bowl of clear soup.

Kimchi Jjigae
Otherwise known as kimchi stew, this kimchi stew is more spicy than any others than I have tried!

Ala-carte
Ddeokbokki
Ddeokbokki is a dish of traditional rice cake and fish cake in a sweet spicy sauce. The rice cake is actually very chewy than expected, though this is the second time I'm trying Korean rice cake.

Verdict

Janchijib definitely deserves two thumbs up from me. The price is reasonable. My bill came up to S$45. Though I am not an expert in Korean cuisine, Janchijib's significantly tastes better than any of those from the food courts. Do not expect too exotic tastes from Korean food, since they use rather familiar ingredients as Chinese food. Appreciating way of preparation is why many savour the Korean cuisine.
