EATZ: Crab 冬粉 (Glass Vermicelli) @ Mr Wok, Old Airport Road Food Centre

Mr. Wok

Block 51 Old Airport Road Food Centre #01-40
Speaking of eating crabs, Singaporeans would definitely shout out Mellben Seafood as the best! The usual chilli crab, black pepper crab, steamed crab, butter crab, a less common XO Crab bee hoon. Nevertheless, there are the more unique white pepper crab and my personal favourite "金沙" crab. So you think you have tried them all!? Wait till you try the fabulous Crab "冬粉" (glass vermicelli or cellophane noodle)!
Stashed away in a corner of the renovated Old Airport Road Food Centre, a place so adored by foodies, is Mr Wok Hong Kong Kitchen. What seem like a simple looking cooked food stall highlights their specialty dish "Crab 冬粉" on a separate signboard. Read on to find out how this differs from the rest and makes it getting reviewed on my blog.
Crab 冬粉
(Crab with glass vermicelli)
S$30 per kg of crab
A messy presentation of regular grey crabs with glass vermicelli strewed all over the rosy red shells, semi-submerged in a slightly turbid brownish sauce, on an earthern pot. Crabs are charged by the weight.

Verdict
"Yummy!" is the word, followed by two thumbs up, if I am willing to set my chopsticks down. I had to test the turbid sauce first before grabbing a crab pincer. I admit that I was initially not too excited when this dish was served, but after taking the first sip, my spirits were suddenly lifted as my tongue started to frolick around the tasty special sauce. The strong charred and garlic taste of the sauce was confirmed when I found a few whole garlics stir-fried till charred. Moving on to the crab, the meat can be easily eaten since the owner had hammered most of the shell. The crab meat has been infused with the same great taste of the sauce, so is the glass vermicelli. After a while, the glass vermicelli soaked up most of the sauce until they are completely infused with the taste of the lovely sauce. I was slurping down the heavily soaked glass vermicelli down but found the small bits of crab shell rather disturbing.
This is a completely different crab dish from many 'big' names and the taste is fabulous! It is a whole new different experience that I must share with all the foodies out there. You must try this, or you can only live to regret it! Mr Wok Hong Kong Kitchen.

muddy colour and tangled strands made it looked rather unappetising though
